INSURANCE

What is Insurance?

Insurance is a form of Risk Management, where you can hedge against the risk of a potential financial loss. By taking out an insurance policy you can transfer the risk of a potential loss from you (the insured) to the Insurer (Allianz Australia Insurance Limited) in exchange for the policy premium you pay to the Insurer. You have a duty of care when taking out a policy to disclose certain fact to the Insurer.

When you have paid your policy premium you are provided with a Product Disclosure Statement (PDS). The PDS includes the terms and conditions of the insurance contract. The insurer then undertakes to pay claims and in the case of Travel Insurance, provide services including Emergency Medical Assistance in accordance with the Benefits under your particular policy.

A Travel Insurance Certificate is issued by MyCover Travel Insurance at the time of purchase stating the cover provided. This confirms your cover and the date and time the policy is effective from.

Type of Insurance Product

Travel Insurance is a general insurance product in Australia and is provided as a Personal Insurance product, however cover can be taken out for both leisure and business travel. Some of the basic features of Travel Insurance include:

  • The timing or occurrence of the loss must be uncertain

  • The risk is common to many people, such as loss or theft of valuables or personal possessions

  • A person owns, or is responsible for, whatever is insured

Using these and other features of an insurance product the Insurer is able to calculate the likelihood that an event will occur and calculate by actuarial methods the appropriate policy premiums.

Protection through the Pooling of Risk

The pooling of risk is a key aspect of Insurance which allows costs to be absorbed across all policies on issue and prevents any individual from having to pay all their own costs related to a particular event or claim.

The majority of people do not want to be exposed to financial risk through accident or illness or misfortune which could subsequently prevent the enjoyment or completion of their trip, whether it is for a holiday or business.

While there are acceptable levels of risk that individuals can use their own judgment to accept, in the case of Travel Insurance it covers as a main benefit Overseas Emergency Medical, Hospital and Dental Expenses, which can be an extremely significant cost under some circumstances.

Overseas Emergency Medical Assistance is a further benefit which can be critical in the guidance of medical treatment, should you be injured or require medical treatment while travelling.
